Why Birth Photography?

newly born baby skin to skin on mother's chest, holding dad's finger

Birth is one of those opportunities in life that you don’t just get back. If you don’t like your engagement photos, you try again another day. If your son’s eyes were closed in all his Kindergarten photos, you send him for retakes. If you don’t like how your boomerang of your dog turned out, you simply take it again.

But there are no retakes at your birth. Your baby takes their first breath ONE TIME. Your partner sees a head emerge ONE TIME. Your care provider announces “it’s a…!” ONE TIME. Your gooey, brand new best friend is placed on your chest ONE TIME.

You CAN’T get back those moments; they’re one time only.

adora birth + wellness offers documentary-style birth photography exclusively in combination with birth doula support services.

Today, thinking about photos of your future birth, you might feel like they will be TMI, full of blood and amniotic fluid. You might think your face will look fat. You might think they capture moments where you don’t look like yourself, or pain you don’t want to remember.

But birth photography is not to capture your most glamorous self. It’s not for Instagram [although I would love to see you share them there and #normalizebirth too!]. It’s not for your family Christmas card or to hang over your headboard.

It’s to document your story. It’s to preserve the memories of brand new parenthood. It’s to remember the moments you forgot between the adrenaline, the hormones, and the exhaustion. It’s to give to your child when they’re old enough to understand all you did for them, and how much love you spent to bring them into this world.

Your birth memories are worth so much more than the sum of a selfie flat on your back; a cell phone pic your nurse took where she didn’t realize your husband’s eyes were closed; a baby’s head smothered in a scratchy white blanket in a plexiglass bassinet; and a shot your husband snapped of you sleeping so deeply you might as well be dead, which you immediately delete from your photos folder.

It’s to show you how your birth really was:

CONFIDENT. CONNECTED. STRONG. Adored.
